The FCC adopted new rules for 6GHz on April 23, 2020.
Currently, the 6GHz band is used in microwave services to support things like public facilities, public safety and wireless transportation systems, and requires strong and continuous operation.
To ensure compatibility between unlicensed devices and licensed 6GHz operation, the FCC proposed to divide unlicensed operation into two categories: standard-power and indoor low-power operations.
The standard-power access point uses an automatic frequency adjustment (AFC) system to determine the frequencies that can be used without causing harmful interference to microwave service.
The indoor low-power operations access point uses the entire 6GHz band and is suitable for connecting home and business devices.
