Mexican Standard NOM-212-SCFI-2017 November 2018: “Primary and power devices and primary batteries-Maximum allowed mercury and cadmium limits- specifications, test methods, and labeling” published September 28, 2019.

This mandatory mexican official standard establishes and defines:

    – Various kinds of battery characteristics

    – Classification by electrochemical system technology

    – Maximum allowable limits of mercury (0.0005% by weight) and cadmium (0.0020% by weight)

    – Labeling on packaging and / or batteries

    – Test method

    – Sampling

    – Conformity assessment procedure

    – Certification process

This Mexican standard applies to primary power supplies and batteries imported into and sold in Mexico and shown in Table 1 of this standard.

All batteries sold as part of electronic / electrical products are outside the scope of this Mexican standard.

In other words, NOM-212-SCFI-2017 does not include cells and batteries contained in electrical or electronic devices and is required for their function.

NOM-212-SCFI-2017 does not correspond to any other international standard.

Labeling requirements for packaging and batteries

To identify the various battery types and the characteristics of the battery body or packaging materials, the following information should be displayed.

    – Battery name, designation or abbreviation of the relevant technology in accordance with this NOM

    – The recommanded expiration date or year, month, or week that may be in the code.

    – Polarity of the positive terminal

    – Normal voltage, volts

    – Manufacturer’s or supplier’s name or trademark

In addition, products covered by this Mexican standard must be clearly and legibly marked on the product packaging in Spanish containing at least the following information:

    – Graphical representation or name of the product

    – The name or business name or bussiness name of the country’s manufacturer or importer

    – A phrase identifying the country of origin (eg “Made in …”, “Manufactured in …”, “Hecho en…”, “Manufacturado en …” etc.).

    – Quantitiy display according to NOM-030-SCFI-2006
